Rapid decarbonization of the energy sector is key to keeping the world on a path that limits global temperature rise to 1.5C, though coal power still accounts for 40% of emissions from fossil fuel combustion (IEA, 2022). At COP26, countries agreed to phase-down unabated coal and phase-out inefficient fossil fuel. The long operating lifetimes of coal plants pose a serious challenge for low carbon transition. This situation is exacerbated in developing countries which, in addition to growing electricity demands, are faced with a much younger stock of existing coal power plants. However, various approaches toward coal transition are emerging.
This workshop presents an overview of different business models, supporting policies, and financing options available to support an accelerated coal phase-out and discusses their respective advantages and challenges. Practitioners will share their experiences and initiatives to facilitate a transition away from coal in key developing countries.
